How to Upload Simple HTML Files Using CPanel Control
By Dale Anthony

This is naturally for the beginner or non-techy who has always wanted a website on the internet but doesn't know how to go about it.

First thing you need is a web host. When purchasing a Web Hosting Plan what you are doing is renting space on the world wide web. It's possible to do it from your own computer but many Internet Service Providers will not allow you to do this because of the massive amounts of Bandwidth it would use up. In most cases your ISP will charge you extra.

O.K. you found a reasonable hosting plan. Now you need a text editor. Microsoft Frontpage, Dreamweaver, even notepad and wordpad in your windows accessories will work. There are also free text editors out there. All you need to do is go to Google and type "free text editor" into the search box and I'm sure you will find one that will do the job.

Once you have your web pages created in your text editor on your computer, one of the easiest ways to get them onto the world wide web is by using the FTP in the CPanel control of your hosting account.

Using the FTP(File Transfer Protocal) in your CPanel control.

Just about all major hosting companies nowadays have CPanel control. It's an easy to use interface that even the non-techy can use without paying for expensive web developers.

When you sign up for web hosting the company sends you (via email) your user name and password. Once you log in the CPanel page is the first page you'll see. Scroll down the page a little bit until you come to the link that says "File Manager." Click that link. A small box will open up with a list of choices. Home Directory, Web Root(public_html), Root ftp directory, Document Root. Choose "Web Root (public_html)". This is the place where you want to put your html files that you've created on your text editor.

Once you're in "Web Root" click the "upload" link at the top of the page. A resource box will open up with a column of Browse buttons. Click the top browse button and all folders on your computer will appear in the next window. Go to the folder where you're keeping the text files that you want to load (example: My Documents) click on one file and let it upload. Repeat this process until all the files are uploaded to your server.

Now you have a website.

Important: Make sure you change the name of the main page of your website to index.html. When you sign up for a hosting account you will also create your own domain name. When someone types in your domain name they will be taken directly to your index.html file which is the main page of your website.
